Transnistria — formally the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic — is an unrecognized breakaway state wedged between Moldova and Ukraine, dependent on Russian political and economic backing. Its mint has carved out a niche producing collectible silver issues for the international numismatic market, a revenue stream that matters in an economy with few others. The Jugger series draws from a 1989 post-apocalyptic Australian film of the same name, an eccentric subject for a sovereign-styled issue from a state most of the world does not officially acknowledge exists.
