Transnistria's claim to Sevastopol as a "Hero City" worth commemorating is itself a political statement. The Soviet-era Hero City designation, awarded to Sevastopol in 1965 for its 250-day siege defense against German and Romanian forces in 1941–42, has been weaponized in post-Soviet identity politics — particularly after 2014, when Russia's annexation of Crimea made Sevastopol a flashpoint that unrecognized Transnistria had obvious ideological reasons to celebrate.
The Transnistrian Republican Bank has issued Hero City series coins since the mid-2000s, working through the full roster of Soviet designations. Sevastopol arriving in the 2020 batch was almost certainly not a coincidence in timing.
