Transnistria's commemorative silver program has long operated in a peculiar space — the coins are issued by a central bank of a state unrecognized by any United Nations member, yet they are struck to genuine numismatic standards and circulate within a functioning, if isolated, economy. This piece honors Moscow's designation as a Hero City, a Soviet-era distinction awarded for exceptional collective resistance during the Second World War, specifically the defense against the German advance in the winter of 1941–42.
The Hero City title was formally codified by a 1965 Presidium decree, decades after the battles it commemorates.
