Transnistria — officially the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic — is an unrecognized breakaway state that declared independence from Moldova in 1990, backed by Russian military presence that remains to this day. Its coins are legal tender within its own borders but accepted nowhere else, making collector issues like this one the primary audience from the outset.
