FC Sheriff Tiraspol — the football club bankrolled by the Sheriff conglomerate, which controls much of Transnistria's retail, fuel, and media sectors — became briefly world-famous in September 2021 when it defeated Real Madrid 2–1 in the UEFA Champions League group stage. The Transnistrian Republican Bank issued this coin the same year, almost certainly capitalizing on that moment. The club's stadium, built to UEFA standards in a breakaway state without international recognition, remains one of the stranger venues in European football.
