Egypt's National Education Day commemorates the birth of the scholar and reformer Rifaa al-Tahtawi, whose 19th-century advocacy for modern secular schooling laid the groundwork for the state education system. This 1979 issue appeared during the late Sadat period, when Egypt was investing heavily in educational infrastructure as part of broader modernization efforts — and facing international isolation following the Camp David Accords signed just the previous year.
