Egypt's first nuclear power plant, under construction at El Dabaa on the Mediterranean coast, is a four-unit VVER-1200 reactor facility built under a 2015 intergovernmental agreement with Russia's Rosatom. The project was decades in the making — Egypt had originally selected the site in the 1980s before the program stalled. Construction formally began in 2022, making this coin essentially commemorative of an infrastructure milestone still in progress at the time of issue.
