Kriegsgefangenenlager Göttingen operated during the First World War as one of hundreds of German prisoner-of-war camps that issued their own internal scrip to manage canteen transactions without introducing Reichsmark currency into the camp economy — a deliberate policy to prevent notes from being hoarded and used to fund escape attempts or bribery. J. C. König & Ebhardt of Hannover, a well-established commercial printer with deep roots in stationery and legal document production, handled output for several camp issues in the region.
The Göttingen camp scrip series is catalogued under Campagna 3021, placing it within a substantial documented body of German PoW issues that emerged between 1914 and 1918.
