Danzig's 1920 silver coinage was struck during a legally anomalous moment: the city had just been declared a Free City under the Treaty of Versailles but its formal constitution wasn't ratified until 1920, leaving its monetary authority in a provisional limbo. These early issues predate the establishment of the Bank of Danzig, which wasn't chartered until 1924, when the gulden replaced this transitional pfennig coinage entirely. The silver content was a deliberate signal of fiscal seriousness from a city-state acutely aware that its political legitimacy was fragile and contested by both Germany and Poland.
