Obverse description The Mexican national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting an eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus devouring a serpent, with an oak and laurel wreath below. The legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS curves along the upper periphery of the heptagonal planchet in raised Latin characters. The design follows the standard republican heraldic style used throughout the mid-twentieth century coinage of Mexico.
