| Obverse description | Central field displays the Costa Rican national coat of arms: a cartouche-shaped shield depicting two oceans separated by a volcanic mountain range, a sailing vessel on each body of water, a rising sun above the mountains, and a row of seven stars in the upper portion of the shield. The shield is surmounted by a decorative scroll and flanked on either side by laurel and oak branches tied at the base. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA runs along the upper periphery, and the date appears in the exergue below the branches. |
