| Obverse description | Central field displays the Costa Rican national coat of arms: a cartouche-shaped shield depicting two oceans separated by a volcanic mountain range, a sailing vessel on each body of water, a rising sun above the mountains, and a row of seven stars in the upper portion of the shield. The shield is surmounted by a decorative scroll and flanked on either side by laurel and oak branches tied at the base.
