Guernsey has issued its own distinctive coinage since formally separating its currency administration from Jersey in 1921, and the wildlife series that has defined its decimal coinage for decades reflects the island's genuine ecological particularity. The palmate newt (*Lissotriton helveticus*) is one of only a handful of amphibian species native to the Channel Islands, where its range sits at the southwestern edge of a distribution that extends across northwestern Europe.
