Mauricius Tiberius inherited an empire near fiscal collapse after decades of war with Persia and the catastrophic losses of the Justinianic plague. His reign saw the Lombards consolidate control over much of Italy, reducing Byzantine tax revenues so severely that the Catania mint — one of the few Sicilian production centers still reliably supplying the western theater — became strategically critical to paying troops in the region. The 10 Nummi struck there are characteristically irregular in flan preparation, a known issue with provincial Sicilian output of this period rather than a reflection of any individual specimen's history.
