Obverse description Facing bust of Emperor Mauricius Tiberius, shown in imperial military attire with helmet and cuirass, rendered in the stylized late antique manner characteristic of Carthaginian mint coinage. The effigy occupies the central field, with the partial Latin legend D N MAVRI - Tb PP AV (Dominus Noster Mauricius Tiberius Perpetuus Augustus) disposed around the periphery. The strike is irregular and somewhat weak, consistent with hammered provincial production of the late sixth century. The coin displays heavy green and brown patination obscuring fine detail. The overall style reflects the abbreviated, provincial interpretation of the imperial portrait type employed at the Carthage mint.
