Obverse description Frontal crowned and mantled imperial bust of Emperor Mauricius Tiberius, depicted facing the viewer in the Byzantine ceremonial style. The crown bears a trefoil or chevron ornament at its apex. The emperor holds a mappa in his right hand and an eagle-tipped sceptre in his left, both attributes of imperial authority. The legend is arranged in the field surrounding the bust. The portrait exhibits the characteristic flat, hieratic style of late Byzantine copper coinage.
