Obverse description Facing helmeted and cuirassed bust of Emperor Justin II, depicted in imperial military attire in the late antique Byzantine tradition. The emperor holds in his left hand a globus cruciger surmounted by a Victory figure, and in his right hand an ornate cross. The facial treatment is frontal and hieratic, characteristic of sixth-century Byzantine coinage. The surrounding legend, frequently blundered in execution, reads D N IVSTIN P P AV, identifying the emperor as Our Lord Justin, Perpetual Augustus.
