Additional information

Constantine IV's reign was defined almost entirely by siege — most critically, the Arab blockade of Constantinople itself from 674 to 678, the first major Islamic assault on the Byzantine capital. The city's survival owed largely to Greek fire, deployed from naval siphons against the Umayyad fleet with devastating effect. That the mint continued producing fractional copper at all during this period reflects the administrative tenacity of the central bureaucracy under extreme military pressure.
