Issued to mark the eightieth anniversary of the Bank of Lithuania's founding, this miniature gold piece belongs to a short series commissioned in the late 1990s as Lithuania reasserted its financial institutions following the restoration of independence in 1990. The Bank itself had originally been established in 1922 during the interwar republic, was dissolved under Soviet occupation, and was re-established in 1990 — making the anniversary simultaneously a celebration of institutional continuity and a pointed statement about the interruption of that continuity.
At just over one gram of .925 gold, these were never intended for circulation. Mintage was tightly limited, and most examples went directly into collector sets.
