San Marino issued a distinct themed series each year throughout the 1980s rather than maintaining a fixed design, making the 1987 set part of an extended program that turned annual coinage into something closer to a commemorative run. The aluminium 10 Lire denomination had negligible purchasing power by this point — Italian inflation had seen to that — and these pieces circulated more as curiosities than currency.
