Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of the Romanian Senate, which was formally established under the 1864 constitutional reforms of Alexandru Ioan Cuza — the same reforms that also reorganized the principalities' legislative structure into a bicameral system for the first time. The Senate was subsequently abolished twice: under the communist constitution of 1948, and briefly dissolved again during the chaotic weeks following the December 1989 revolution before being reconstituted in 1990.
