Issued as part of Romania's ongoing numismatic program commemorating national heraldic symbols, this piece was struck the same year Romania was navigating the tail end of severe IMF-mandated austerity following the 2008–2010 economic crisis — a period when the Banca Națională was simultaneously defending the leu and producing collector silver it knew would never circulate. The irony is not subtle.
