Joachimsthal — the Bohemian mining town whose silver output was so dominant that its coins gave the world the word "dollar" (Joachimsthaler, shortened to thaler) — was still among the most productive mints in Central Europe when this piece was struck. Maximilian II had been crowned King of Bohemia in 1562, three years before this issue, navigating an uneasy religious climate between Catholic and Protestant factions that would define his reign until 1576.
The Kreuzers of this mint tend to show characteristic die rust in the fields, a known artifact of Joachimsthal's high-volume production practices in the 1560s.
