Vinnytsia, a regional center in west-central Ukraine, was selected for this issue as part of the National Bank's long-running "Regions of Ukraine" series, which began in 2003 and systematically worked through the country's oblasts over the following decade. The series was conceived partly as a soft-power exercise in post-Soviet national identity — documenting a geography that had spent most of the 20th century subordinated to Moscow's administrative categories rather than its own historical distinctiveness.
KM# 720 was struck at the Kyiv mint with a combined proof and brilliant uncirculated output typical of the series' later issues.
