Issued as part of Ukraine's long-running regional series celebrating the oblasts of the country, this coin marks Ternopil — a city in western Ukraine that changed hands repeatedly through the twentieth century, passing between Austria-Hungary, Poland, the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, and the Soviet Union again before Ukrainian independence in 1991. The series itself accelerated noticeably after 2014, with the National Bank leaning into nationally cohesive themes during an period of acute territorial pressure.
