St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery in Kyiv was demolished by Soviet authorities in 1936 — dynamited to make room for a government complex that was never actually built. The decision to feature it on this 1998 commemorative came just seven years after Ukrainian independence, when reconstruction of the cathedral was already being debated as a national priority. The rebuild was completed in 1999, the year after this coin appeared.
