The pharaoh cuttlefish (Sepia pharaonis) — not Otis tarda, which is the great bustard — is a recurring subject in Ukrainian commemorative silver, but this 2013 issue belongs to the National Bank's long-running wildlife protection series, which has documented threatened Eurasian fauna since the early 2000s. The great bustard was once widespread across the Ukrainian steppe before intensive agriculture and unregulated hunting collapsed populations through the twentieth century. Ukraine's remaining birds are largely confined to isolated pockets in the southeast.
KM#697 carries a mintage of 5,000 pieces, consistent with most issues in this series.
