Bohdan Khmelnytsky led the 1648 Cossack–Polish War that effectively ended Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth dominance over Left-Bank Ukraine, a conflict whose consequences reverberate in Ukrainian national consciousness to this day. The 1654 Treaty of Pereyaslav, which brought the Hetmanate under Muscovite suzerainty, remains one of the most contested diplomatic documents in Eastern European historiography — Ukrainian, Russian, and Polish scholars have never agreed on what Khmelnytsky actually signed away.
The National Bank of Ukraine has issued multiple commemorative series honoring Hetmanate figures, with Khmelnytsky appearing across several denominations and years. KM#790 belongs to a recurring pattern of .999 silver issues tied to national historical figures that accelerated markedly after the 2014 Euromaidan events.
