Ukraine's National Bank issued this piece as part of a broader series celebrating the history of navigation and seafaring along the Black Sea and Dnipro river trade routes — corridors that connected Kyiv Rus merchants to Byzantine markets as early as the 9th century. The series drew quiet criticism from numismatic historians for compressing several distinct maritime traditions into a single thematic program.
