Issued as part of Ukraine's ongoing Christian sacred sites series, this coin commemorates the Annunciation Cathedral in Kharkiv — a church whose history was violently interrupted during the Soviet period when it was closed, partially demolished, and repurposed. Reconstruction of the cathedral only became possible after Ukrainian independence, with major restoration work continuing into the 2000s.
The timing of this 2008 issue places it squarely in the restoration period, making it as much a document of post-Soviet religious revival as anything else.
