Bad Ischl's notgeld was issued during the acute coin shortage that followed Austria's defeat in the First World War, when the new republican government struggled to maintain small-denomination currency supply across the provinces. Spa towns like Bad Ischl — still trading on prewar aristocratic tourism despite the collapse of the Habsburg court that had made the town famous — issued their own fractional notes to keep local commerce moving.
