Bad Ischl's notgeld was issued during the acute coin shortage that followed Austria's defeat in the First World War, when the new republican government struggled to maintain small-denomination currency supply across the provinces. Spa towns like Bad Ischl — still trading on prewar aristocratic tourism despite the collapse of the Habsburg court that had made the town famous — issued their own fractional notes to keep local commerce moving. Three municipal signatures on a 10 Heller piece is unusual; it suggests the Kurortsgemeinde required joint authorization at even the smallest denominations, possibly a safeguard against the fraud that plagued notgeld issuers elsewhere in the Austrian republic.
