Aschach an der Donau is a small market town in Upper Austria, and this 10 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left local governments scrambling to fill a severe coin shortage — the Marktgemeinde simply printed their own. Most Austrian Heller Notgeld was issued in 1920 at the height of the shortage, redeemable locally and rarely traveling far. Survival rates vary wildly; some village issues were printed in tiny quantities while others flooded the nascent collector market almost immediately.
