Opmerkingen

Artstetten is inseparable from the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose castle there became his burial place after the 1914 Sarajevo assassination — an event that upended the empire whose currency this note was designed to replace. By 1920, Austria was deep in postwar monetary chaos, and hundreds of small municipalities issued their own Notgeld to compensate for the chronic shortage of small-denomination coin. Artstetten's 10 Heller was one of these emergency pieces, purely local in validity and typically redeemable only within the issuing community.

The Marktgemeinde series is among the more obscure Austrian municipal issues, with surviving quantities difficult to estimate reliably.
