Pierbach is a small rural commune in the Perg district of Upper Austria, and this 10 Heller Notgeld belongs to the enormous wave of Austrian municipal emergency currency issued between 1919 and 1921. The postwar collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left the central government unable to supply adequate small change, forcing thousands of towns — including remote agricultural communities like Pierbach — to print their own fractional notes. Most were redeemable only locally and for limited periods.
The Jaksch catalogue reference places this squarely in the documented Upper Austrian series. Pierbach's issues are not among the rarer rural Notgeld, but survival in unfolded condition is less common than the print runs suggest — these circulated hard in village commerce before redemption deadlines expired.
