The 1997 issue commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Marshall Plan, under which the Netherlands received approximately $1.1 billion in American aid between 1948 and 1952. Dutch industrial recovery — particularly in Rotterdam's port infrastructure, devastated by both wartime bombing and deliberate German demolition during the retreat — was among the more visible successes the program could point to in Western Europe.
