Issued as part of Switzerland's ongoing "Animals of the Alps" commemorative program, the Hare piece continues a series that has drawn consistent collector interest since its inception. The Alpine hare (Lepus timidus) was chosen partly for its ecological significance to Swiss highland regions, where seasonal coat changes from brown to white have long made it a marker species for altitude and season.
The bimetallic format was adopted for the entire series as a deliberate anti-counterfeiting measure, the same technology used in Swiss circulation 5-franc pieces.
