Middelburg issued this local token currency as part of a wave of municipal "local money" experiments that swept the Netherlands in the early 1990s, tied largely to urban heritage festivals and regional identity promotion following European integration pressures. The florijnen denomination deliberately invoked the pre-decimalization florin — the gulden's older name — giving the piece an air of civic antiquity it does not technically possess.
