Beschrijving voorzijde Three-quarter profile effigy of King Willem-Alexander facing right, partially overlaid by the crowned Dutch royal coat of arms rendered as a silhouette. The portrait and heraldic device are juxtaposed to create a layered artistic composition. A circular legend surrounds the design along the border, identifying the monarch and his royal title.

Aanvullende informatie

Issued to mark the UNESCO World Heritage listing of Amsterdam's seventeenth-century canal ring, the Stelling van Amsterdam referenced here is in fact a separate designation entirely — a 135-kilometre ring of nineteenth-century water-control fortifications encircling the city, awarded World Heritage status in 1996. The Dutch were notably early adopters of the UNESCO commemorative coin program, and this gold issue was part of a broader series pairing Willem-Alexander's reign with Dutch heritage sites.

The Stelling functioned by deliberate inundation: attackers would face flooded polders precisely deep enough to impede infantry but too shallow for boats.
