| 裏面の説明 | The reverse features two historical medal or coin reproductions rendered in intaglio-style roundels side by side: the left roundel, dated 1409, depicts a medieval seated figure representing the university's founding era, while the right roundel portrays a bust of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in period attire with flowing wig. The date 2009 appears between the two roundels in the lower central field, and a stylized architectural rendering of a Leipzig university building is depicted in the lower exergue. The commemorative legend 600 JAHRE UNIVERSITÄT LEIPZIG is inscribed in three lines across the upper field. |

Leipzig's university, founded in 1409, is among the oldest continuously operating in the German-speaking world — Leibniz and Wagner both studied there, and Goethe enrolled in 1765, later setting key scenes of Faust in its Auerbach's Keller. The 2009 issue marks the 600th anniversary. Germany's commemorative €10 silver program, running from 2002 through 2010, was terminated after the series consistently failed to recoup minting costs against face value, making later issues like this one marginally harder to source in original packaging.
