| Additional information |
Pegasus Bridge — the Bénouville drawbridge over the Caen Canal — was seized by men of the British 6th Airborne Division in the early minutes of June 6, 1944, in what is generally considered the first Allied ground action of the Normandy invasion. Major John Howard's D Company landed by glider within meters of the objective, a feat of navigation that remains studied in military academies. The bridge was renamed in honor of the Airborne's pegasus insignia shortly after liberation.
Monnaie de Paris has issued commemoratives for each major D-Day anniversary decade; the 80th cycle produced several themed pieces across different bridges and landing zones.
