Pavol of Levoča — known in Slovak as Majster Pavol — carved the high altar of the Church of St. James in Levoča sometime around 1508–1517, producing what remains the tallest Gothic wooden altar in the world at roughly 18.6 meters. The coin was issued to mark the 500th anniversary of the altar's completion, though the precise date of finishing has never been firmly established, which makes that anniversary itself a scholarly approximation.
Levoča was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009, partly on the strength of Pavol's surviving workshop.
