Part of Germany's long-running "Märchen" fairy tale series, this issue draws on the Brothers Grimm collection first published in 1812 — though the Hänsel and Gretel story itself has roots in the famine periods of medieval Europe, when child abandonment was a documented reality rather than literary invention. The copper-nickel variant was struck alongside a silver version for the same release year, making it the more accessible of the two for circulation-grade collectors.
