Issued to mark the 200th anniversary of Büchner's birth, this coin was authorized under Germany's long-running commemorative program administered through the Bundesfinanzministerium. Büchner died of typhus in Zürich in 1837 at twenty-three, leaving behind an unfinished dramatic fragment — Woyzeck — that wasn't staged until 1913, seventy-six years after his death.
The coin was struck at multiple German mints simultaneously, each carrying its own mint mark: A, D, F, G, or J.
