| Additional information |
Issued as part of Italy's ongoing series honoring figures of Italian art, this coin commemorates Francesco Guardi, the Venetian vedutista whose atmospheric depictions of canal life and architectural decay distinguished him sharply from his more celebrated contemporary Canaletto. Where Canaletto sold precision to foreign collectors, Guardi sold mood — a distinction that left him financially precarious for much of his life despite eventual fame.
The Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato struck this piece under its collector coin program, produced in proof finish with mintages kept deliberately low to sustain series demand.
