| Obverse description | A three-quarter-facing bust portrait of the Baroque master Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio dominates the right portion of the field, rendered in high relief with detailed curly hair and a short beard characteristic of period portraiture. To the lower left, a richly detailed basket overflowing with fruits, leaves, and vines is depicted in a style directly evoking Caravaggio's celebrated still-life compositions. The legend REPUBBLICA is inscribed along the left arc and ITALIANA along the lower arc of the coin, forming the full state title. The engraver's signature U. PERNAZZA appears incuse along the lower rim. The mirrored proof fields contrast sharply with the frosted relief elements, lending exceptional depth to the design. |
