Germany's federal commemorative coin program relaunched aggressively in 2002 alongside euro currency adoption, with individual Länder given thematic representation through a rolling series. Berlin drew the museum island on the Spree — the Museumsinsel — which had spent much of the postwar decades split between East and West jurisdiction, with the Pergamon and Bode under GDR administration while reunification negotiations over the collections' futures dragged well into the 1990s. UNESCO added the island to the World Heritage List in 1999, directly prompting this issue.
