Additional information

Issued to mark the marriage of Crown Prince Willem-Alexander to Máxima Zorreguieta on February 2, 2002, this piece arrived with a degree of political sensitivity: Máxima's father, Jorge Zorreguieta, was a senior official in Argentina's military junta during the Dirty War and was explicitly barred from attending the wedding ceremony. The Dutch government commissioned a formal historical inquiry before the marriage was permitted to proceed.

The Royal Dutch Mint struck commemorative gold issues in relatively constrained quantities for this event, keeping collector demand firm. KM#244 is the gold denomination in a set that also included silver.
