| Beschrijving voorzijde | A detailed architectural view of the historic Schönlaterngasse (Beautiful Lantern Lane) in Vienna's inner city occupies the field, depicting a streetscape of Baroque and medieval façades rendered in fine relief. The denomination '10 EURO' appears in the upper left field, while a decorative scroll banner at the top bears the inscription 'SCHÖNLATERN GASSE'. The date '2009' is inscribed in the lower left exergue, and the legend 'REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH' arcs along the lower and right periphery of the coin. |

Part of the Austrian Mint's "Legends of Austria" silver series, this issue draws on the legend of the Basilisk of Schönlaterngasse — a story rooted in a documented 1212 incident in Vienna's inner city, where a decomposed body was reportedly found in a well, spawning centuries of folklore about a creature whose gaze turned flesh to stone. The well still exists at Schönlaterngasse 7.
