Antwerp-Centraal was built between 1895 and 1905 under the patronage of King Leopold II, financed largely through profits extracted from the Congo Free State. The architect Louis Delacenserie drew heavily from Viennese and Baroque railway architecture, producing a structure so elaborate it was later nicknamed "the railway cathedral." The station underwent a massive engineering project completed in 2007 to add three subterranean levels, allowing through-traffic to replace the original dead-end configuration — a project that took over a decade and required underpinning the original structure without disturbing it.
Belgium's commemorative euro program has issued coins for major architectural landmarks with some regularity since the early 2000s; this piece falls within that series.
