Issued to mark the 130th anniversary of De Gasperi's birth, this coin commemorates the Christian Democrat who served as Italy's Prime Minister for eight consecutive governments between 1945 and 1953 — longer than any other holder of that office in the republican period. He was among the founding architects of what became the European Union, working alongside Adenauer and Schuman to build the postwar supranational framework from scratch.
De Gasperi spent much of the Fascist period in effective internal exile, working as a cataloguer in the Vatican Library after Mussolini's government imprisoned and then released him in 1929.
